The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) has recently announced that they will be conducting planned burns on Fraser Island between 9 August and 31 August 2013, weather permitting, as part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests. As a result, smoke may be seen in and around the Bogimbah, Ungowa and Garrys Anchorage areas.
Please note that the burns will not affect Tours to Fraser Island, as we do not enter these areas. We will continue to operate our Fraser Island Day Tours as per usual.
In case you’re interested, the aim of these burns is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas within the Great Sandy National park. This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.
